Pet health insurer, Nationwide, has shared a report that points to the popularity of Poodle-mix dogs in recent years, based on analysis of pet insurance information. The report suggests that Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and other cross-Poodle breeds have become significantly more popular between 2013 to 2021. During that time, Goldendoodles increased by 347% in Nationwide’s insurance data.
“Veterinary practices have definitely been noticing how many more Doodles they were seeing, and since we track purebreds, crossbreds and mixed-breeds in our policy data, we thought it would be interesting to see just how strong the trend is,” said Dr. Jules Benson, chief veterinary officer at Nationwide. “Those results may not be surprising, but the significant difference in the relative rate of cancer claims in purebred Labs, Goldens and Poodles and their crossbred offspring is definitely a surprise.”
Labradoodles have grown in popularity by 196%, followed by Poodle mixes across the reporting period. As the breeds have become more common, purebred Poodles, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers have declined in popularity by 32%, 4%, and 32%, respectively.
Poodle-mixed breeds also have lower cancer claims, according to Nationwide, which based the data on 1.6 million insurance claims from 2015 to 2021. Both Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles were at 3.8 times greater risk for a claim of cancer compared to Goldendoodles. Similarly, Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers were 2.5 times more likely to have a cancer claim compared to Labradoodles. Across all purebred dogs and mixed-breed dogs, the former was 188.5% more likely to have a cancer claim.
