- Time management — The New York Vet Show offered a short-course format to ensure veterinary professionals weren’t away from their practices for too long, and staggered the programs to maximize productive learning.
Educational program
The New York Vet Show offered several comprehensive clinical tracks, a business theater, and a veterinary technician track, to provide a relevant continuing education experience. Session highlights included:
- Yes, They’re Googling You: Managing Your Online Reputation — Your existing and potential clients are definitely googling your practice and veterinarians. Online reputation sites, such as Google, Yelp, and Nextdoor, collect and display information about your practice regardless of your online presence. Caitlin DeWilde, DVM, explained how being proactive can ensure you present the best, most correct information, to defend your practice against negative reviews.
- Get Nervy: Top Local Anesthetic Blocks for Every Practice — Tamara Grubb, DVM, PhD, DACVAA, discussed how local anesthetics help patients recover better from anesthesia, behave more normally at home, and interact more with their owners. She reviewed local anesthetic drugs, and demonstrated the most commonly used local anesthetic blocks.
- How to Help the Itchy Cat — Andrew Rosenberg, DVM, DACVD, reviewed feline skin reaction patterns, and explained how to approach a pruritic cat work-up, emphasizing which therapeutics to use and why.
- Urinalysis: Urine Luck if You Performed a Urinalysis on the Emergency Patient — William D. Saxon, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC, used clinical case discussions to demonstrate the importance of a complete urinalysis, including physical, chemical, and microscopic analysis, especially in an emergency patient.
- The Roles of Communication in Veterinary Practices — David Hall, the co-founder and chief strategist of GeniusVets, explained communication strategies that can help veterinary practices improve workplace satisfaction, attract and retain veterinarians, and deliver outstanding customer service. He explored each communication touchpoint and showed how internal and external communications can create a cohesive work environment and increase profitability.
- Turning Passion into Purpose: Your Inner Compass — Kenichiro Yagi, MS, RVT, VTS (ECC), VTS (SAIM), explained why turning passion into purpose is necessary for finding meaningfulness in a career and life. He explored concepts such as passion versus purpose, luck, defining moments, and crossroads in life.
- Cancer Cliff Notes — Jenny Fisher, RVT, VTS (Oncology), provided a veterinary oncology overview, from basic cancer biology to common tumor types and cancer treatments. She also led an adjunct session, entitled “Cancer Lagniappe,” that explained why combining conventional gold standard treatments can provide increased quality and potentially quantity of life for cancer patients.
- Conscious Conversations: Speaking the Right Words to Diffuse Conflict — Debra Vey Voda-Hamilton, the principal at Hamilton Law and Mediation, PLLC, helped attendees identify their role in a conflict, and explained how to control their triggers, impulses, and mindset to serve them better. Attendees learned how to use stop, drop, and roll tools to bolster self-care, recognize triggers, and respond in a manner that fosters collaborative conversations with themselves and others.
Hands-on Lab
The New York Vet Show also offered a small-scale, hands-on lab where industry professionals taught relevant experiences and gave personal feedback, allowing attendees to learn and practice new skills. The lab, whose topic was wound closure, focused on suturing and advanced knot-tying for procedural closures. Attendees received hands-on training on suturing patterns and advanced knot-tying techniques used in common veterinary surgical cases. The learning objectives included examining suturing techniques for procedural closures, identifying and practicing knot-tying approaches, such as Miller’s knot, Strangle knot, and Aberdeen knot, and discussing the benefits of specific knot-tying techniques. The lab presenters included:
- Lynetta Freeman, DVM, MS, DACVS, MBA — Dr. Freeman served as a clinical soft tissue surgeon at Purdue University, and taught the general surgery course to third-year students. She also led the Priority 4 Paws program, which serves shelter animals with a mobile surgery service, for fourth-year students. Dr. Freeman performed basic research in wound healing and Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). She was recognized as an ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
- J. Brad Case, DVM, MS, DACVS — Dr. Case earned his DVM from University of California, Davis, and his MS from Colorado State University, where he also completed his residency. He currently serves as the Veterinary Endoscopy Society president. His primary clinical research interests are the development of minimally invasive and vascular interventional procedures.
The New York Vet Show was the perfect balance between high quality education and efficient time-management. The convenient two-day format allowed attendees to receive the continuing education they required, without unnecessary time away from their practices. Plans are already being made for the 2022 show at the Javits Center on November 3 and 4.
