PetSmart Charities has committed as much as $1 million in funding to agencies involved in relief efforts for pets and their families impacted by the recent hurricane, Ida. Thus far, the charity has donated nearly $320,000, including the Louisiana SPCA, Louisiana Search and Rescue Team, and Mississippi Animal Rescue Team.
"As the full extent of damages caused by Hurricane Ida are still being assessed, we know that response and recovery will take time," said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. "Many families with pets and animal shelters were already facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are stretched to their limits. Grant funding from PetSmart Charities will help provide essential care to pet families and displaced pets in the areas impacted by this devastating storm. We want to help keep people and their pets together during the most difficult times."
Grant funding applications will be accepted beginning in September. Grant funding is available to local and national response groups which also care for pets, such as community-run animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and food banks.
In past disasters, PetSmart Charities has mobilized efforts to provide funding for disaster relief efforts, including funding that can support pet owners, volunteers, and pets through vaccinations, food, kennels, and other materials or personnel.
